THE BURNING FOREST-A CLIMATIC FURRY?

The world witnessed an enormous amount of significant events in 2019. Be it the Hongkong protest abrogation article 370, BREXIT, US-China trade war, and many more. But the topic which emerged out as cynosures were Amazon Forest Fires and the Australian bushfires. These two abundantly contributed to making 2019 the hottest year after 2016. The fire was spread at such a huge scale that it alarmed environmentalists and government worldwide to ponder on if the burning forest is a climatic furry?

Amazon Forest and Australian bushes: Who are you?

Amazon forest is a moist tropical rainforest. It holds a massive amount of the world’s oxygen. It’s often referred to as the “lungs of the earth” because it generates more than 20% of the world's oxygen. Brazile comprises 670 million hectares of forest. this region includes territory belonging to 9 nations. These forests are home to a colossal variety of animal species. Australian bushes or forest are the natural underdeveloped area which holds a large diversity of exotic flora and fauna. It is enriched with different plants like waratah, Craspedia, flannel flower, etc, and animals like koalas, platypus, kangaroo, wombats, etc. Australia has about 134million hectares of forest most of it is in the north and east.

Blazed and How?

Amazon forest:

Forest fire is a very common phenomenon that is generally natural but in the Amazon forest it was man-made. Deforestation is the major contributing factor behind the catastrophic incident. Going by a newspaper report, it suggested that some farmers and small skill traders emboldened by Jair Bolsonaro’s anti-environment rhetoric organized a fire day along BR-163, a highway that ran through the heart of the rain forest. The fires were so large that they were visible from space. NASA released images showing the spread of the fire. According to the world meteorological organization, the fire was so dense that it blocked the sunlight and enveloped the region around the Atlantic coast and Sao, Pacialo in smoke.

 Australian forest or bushes:

Forest fire is routine during Australian summer which starts around October. It is known to be the most fire-prone continent of all the other continents. It is the driest inhabited continent thus making bush fire a common event. But this time unprecedented forest fire engulfed large parts of Australia. It lasted for more than 3 months. The reason stated behind the proliferated fire was the presence of one of the strongest ever poster Indian Ocean dipole (IOD). IOD refers to the difference in the eastern and western Indian ocean, it either aids or cuts off the moister supply to Australia. This year the western Indian ocean has been bizarrely cold, which contributed to the rainfall deficiency over Australia.

Climate Distorted!

Any episode which pesters mother nature results in depressing the climate more. The burning forests add on to the CO2 and CO emissions. It also influences the water cycle, not only on a regional scale but also on a global scale. The ramification of amazon and Australian fires is poignant. The fires have created a pressure on the delicate ecosystem. It has resulted in a significant loss of wildlife. The jaguar, a red-listed animal was targeted by the amazon fires. The Australian fires barbarously perished 30% of the Koalas population. Notwithstanding that, the fires also took a toll on the “kangaroos population” murdering them drastically

What's up with the controversy?

Looking at the speculations made by different news agencies and organizations, the forest fires tales seem more twisted than they appear.  Leaders and environmentalists around the world are alleging Brazilian president ‘Jair Bolsenaro’ for destroying the worlds largest rain forest. A newspaper report that there was a spark spike in deforestation during July, some regions organized ‘Fire days’ to take advantage of weaker enforcement of the law by the authorities.

Since Bolsenaro took power the environmental agency has issued fewer penalties and has been empathetic with loggers which resulted in a boost of deforestation. Australian PM “Scott Mornson’ and his government also faced a mounting backlash over the climatic policies, he rejected calls of funding firefighters saying existing resources were sufficient and that volunteers wanted to be there. Much criticism was focused on government support for coal-fired plants. But the labor opposition also attracted anger over its pro-coal policies.

COP 25- Why it collapsed?

COP 25 (conference of parties) was held in Madrid under the United Nations framework convention on climate change. It was the longest climatic conference. The outcome of the conference was dissatisfactory. The failure was due to the massive gap between the ideologies of the scientist and the powerful political leaders regarding the actions that should be taken for climate change. The major agenda for the Madrid conference was to decide the rules for a new ‘carbon market’ to be set up under the Paris agreement. The countries had a major disagreement about the provision related to it. The developed countries have been negligent toward the cuts in their carbon emission. The only relief right now is the push from developing countries like India, China, and many others have argued that it is important to start delivering on the previous commitments in accordance with climate change instead of making new ones.
